Deck Restoration Townsville, a DHPainting project

Deck Restoration Townsville

Bring a tired tropical deck back to life, and keep it that way through the wet season.

A deck in Townsville lives outdoors in the harshest conditions a piece of timber can face. Intense sun bleaches it grey by the end of its first dry season, the wet season drives moisture into every board and joint, and the shade of a pergola or a Queenslander verandah is the perfect home for black mould. DHPainting restores decks across Townsville so that the timber is protected properly, not just made to look good for a few weeks.

Most of the decks we work on are hardwood, often spotted gum, merbau or ironbark, on homes in suburbs like Hermit Park, Mundingburra, Castle Hill and Bushland Beach. We also restore softwood decks, pool decks and the verandah boards on older timber homes. Each one starts with an honest assessment: some boards can be brought back with a clean and sand, some need replacing, and we will tell you which is which before any work begins.

Deck restoration is a careful trade. Rushing the sanding or sealing damp timber is how a deck ends up peeling within a year. Our team has restored outdoor timber in North Queensland for over 15 years and we back the workmanship with our 10-year warranty.

Built for North Queensland

Tropical timber needs a different approach

The two enemies of a Townsville deck are UV and moisture, and they take turns. Through the dry season the sun breaks down the lignin on the surface of the timber, which is what turns boards grey and makes them furry. When the wet arrives, that degraded surface soaks up water, the boards swell and shrink, fasteners loosen and mould and tannin stains set in. A finish that is not designed for this cycle simply lets go.

We prepare the timber back to a sound surface, let it dry to a moisture content that will accept a finish, and then choose between a penetrating oil and a film-forming water-based coating based on how the deck is used and how much maintenance you want. We time the work for a dry window and avoid sealing a deck that has not had a chance to dry out after rain.

  • Moisture testing before any oil or coating goes on
  • Mould and tannin treatment on shaded and south-facing decks
  • Penetrating oils for hardwood that gets full tropical sun
  • Water-based film coatings where a longer recoat cycle is wanted
  • Stainless or galvanised fastener replacement on coastal decks
  • Dry-season scheduling with a cure window before the next rain

How We Work

What a deck restoration involves

The order of these steps matters. Skipping the drying time or the second sand is the most common reason a restored deck fails.

  1. Step 1

    Assessment and quote

We inspect the boards, joists, fixings and finish, test for soft or rotten timber and give you an itemised quote that separates repairs from the restoration itself.

  2. Step 2

    Repairs and refastening

Rotten or split boards are replaced, loose boards are refixed and popped nails or screws are replaced with stainless or galvanised fixings suited to coastal air.

  3. Step 3

    Clean and strip

The deck is washed with a timber cleaner to lift dirt, mould and old finish, and any grey, degraded surface is removed with a brightener so the timber comes back to its natural colour.

  4. Step 4

    Sand and dry

Boards are machine sanded to a sound, even surface, edges and rails are hand sanded, and the deck is left to dry until a moisture reading confirms it is ready for a finish.

  5. Step 5

    Finish in thin, even coats

Two coats of the chosen oil or coating are applied by brush, pad or roller, working with the grain, with the cure time respected between coats.

  6. Step 6

    Sign-off and maintenance plan

You inspect the deck with the team leader, complete our handwritten sign-off sheet and receive a simple maintenance schedule so the finish lasts.

Deck Restoration Townsville: common questions

My deck has gone grey. Does it need replacing?

Usually not. Grey timber is a surface layer that has been broken down by UV. If the boards are structurally sound, cleaning, brightening and sanding will bring back the natural colour, and a good finish will keep it. We only recommend replacement for boards that are soft, split or rotten.

Should I oil my deck or coat it?

A penetrating oil soaks into the timber, looks natural and is easy to recoat, but needs attention every year or so in Townsville sun. A water-based film coating lasts longer between recoats and resists mould well, but needs more preparation if it ever has to be stripped. We will recommend one based on how exposed the deck is and how much upkeep you want.

How often will a Townsville deck need recoating?

An oiled hardwood deck in full sun typically needs a light clean and recoat every 12 to 18 months. A shaded or covered deck, or one with a film coating, can go two to three years. Regular washing to remove mould and dirt extends the life of any finish.

Can you restore a deck during the wet season?

We can do the repairs and cleaning at any time, but we will not seal timber that has not dried out properly. In the wet season we watch the forecast and the moisture reading closely and will hold the finishing coats until a dry window is available.

What about mould on the shaded part of my deck?

Mould is treated with a timber cleaner during preparation and the surface is then sanded clean. Choosing a finish with mould resistance and keeping the deck washed afterwards stops it coming straight back in the humidity.
