Water Damage Restoration Townsville, a DHPainting project

Water Damage Restoration Townsville

Stained ceilings, bubbling paint and mould repaired properly after the wet season.

Every wet season leaves a trail of water damage across Townsville. A monsoon trough sits over the city for a week, a gutter overflows, a roof screw works loose in a storm, and by the time the rain stops there is a brown ring on the ceiling, paint lifting off the wall and a smell of mould in the hallway. DHPainting restores water damaged interiors and exteriors across Townsville, from a single stained ceiling in Kirwan to flood-affected ground floors in low-lying suburbs like Idalia, Rosslea and Hermit Park.

Water damage is not just a painting job. Painting over a damp wall or a mould-affected ceiling guarantees the problem returns within months. Our team checks that the source of the water has been dealt with, confirms the substrate is dry with a moisture meter, repairs the plaster, render or timber, treats mould and then uses stain-blocking primers before the finish coats go on.

We have over 15 years of local experience and can work from an insurance assessor's scope, quoting line by line against what your insurer has approved and flag anything the scope has missed.

Built for North Queensland

Why water damage in the tropics needs more than a repaint

Townsville's humidity means wet building materials dry slowly, and mould can establish itself in plasterboard and timber within days. Even after the surface looks dry, the inside of a wall cavity or a ceiling sheet can stay damp for weeks. Paint applied over that moisture blisters, peels and traps the mould behind a new film, where it keeps growing.

The second problem is staining. Tannins from wet timber and the salts in dirty roof water migrate to the surface and bleed through standard paint, which is why a ceiling that has been repainted once often shows the same brown ring a few months later. We treat the cause with the correct primer and only then apply the decorative coats.

  • Moisture testing of ceilings, walls and skirtings before any work starts
  • Mould treatment with appropriate cleaners, not just a wipe down
  • Oil-based or shellac stain blockers to seal tannin and water marks
  • Plasterboard sheets replaced where they have sagged or softened
  • Render and blockwork repaired and sealed after external water ingress
  • Elastomeric membranes where rain is coming through cracked walls

How We Work

How we restore a water damaged property

Our process is designed so the repair lasts, which means the painting is the last step rather than the first.

  1. Step 1

    Assessment and moisture readings

We inspect every affected room, take moisture readings and confirm the leak or flood source has been fixed. If it has not, we tell you what needs attention before we start.

  2. Step 2

    Scope and quote

You receive an itemised quote covering repairs, treatments and painting. If an insurer is involved, we align our quote with the assessor's scope and note anything it has left out.

  3. Step 3

    Drying and mould treatment

Affected areas are left to dry fully, with fans or dehumidifiers where needed. Mould is treated and removed from plaster, timber and cornices before any sanding or filling.

  4. Step 4

    Repairs

Damaged plasterboard is replaced, cracks and joints are reset, render is patched and swollen timber is repaired or replaced, then everything is sanded ready for priming.

  5. Step 5

    Stain blocking and priming

Water marks and tannin stains are sealed with a dedicated stain-blocking primer so they cannot bleed through the finish, and bare materials are primed to suit.

  6. Step 6

    Finish coats and sign-off

Two finish coats are applied and colour matched to the rest of the room where only part of a space is affected. You sign off on the work and receive our 10-year workmanship warranty.

Water Damage Restoration Townsville: common questions

Can you just paint over the water stain on my ceiling?

Not if you want it to stay hidden. Water stains carry tannins and salts that bleed through ordinary paint. The ceiling must be dry, the stain sealed with a stain-blocking primer and then painted. Done that way, the mark does not come back.

How long after a leak before you can paint?

Plasterboard and timber need to dry fully, which in Townsville's humidity can take one to three weeks depending on how wet they got and whether drying equipment is used. We measure moisture rather than guess, and we will not paint until the readings are right.

Do you remove mould or just paint over it?

We treat and remove mould before painting. Painting over active mould seals it in and it grows back through the new coating. Where plasterboard is badly affected, replacing the sheet is cheaper and more reliable than trying to clean it.

Will you work with my insurance company?

Yes. We regularly quote against assessor scopes for Townsville claims after storms and floods. Our quotes are itemised so they can be matched line by line, and we point out any repairs the scope has missed.

The ceiling is sagging. Can it be saved?

A slightly bowed sheet that has dried out can sometimes be re-fixed and skimmed, but plasterboard that has softened or dropped should be replaced. We assess each ceiling on site and recommend the option that will last.

Can you stop rain coming through my rendered walls?

If water is entering through cracked or porous render, we repair the cracks and apply an elastomeric membrane coating that keeps water out while allowing the wall to move. If the water is coming from a roof, flashing or window, that needs a separate repair first.
